You’ve read our stories, seen our bylines and maybe even hung out with us at an event or two, but who are the people behind Community Rec? Faces Behind the Features is a series to help you better understand the writers who bring you industry news and best practices daily.

John Reecer is an assistant editor for Peake Media, mainly working with Campus Rec Magazine and Community Rec Magazine. He joined the team in May of 2022 after his time as a news reporter at the Bowling Green Daily News. John loves telling stories that help connect people through empathy. If he isn’t at the office, you’ll find him working out, hanging out with his friends, spending time with his two nieces, watching a good movie or playing with his Labrador Retriever named Falco.

Learn more about him —  in his own words — below.

How long have you been with Peake Media?

I have been at Peake Media since May of 2022.

What is your favorite story topic to write about?

I love writing about new and exciting programs being created throughout the campus and community recreation industry.

What is your favorite thing about the community rec and campus rec industry?

My favorite thing about this industry is the positivity and energy that comes from everyone I speak with. I’m by nature a very passionate person, and I like being around other people who are passionate and love what they do.

How do you live a healthy lifestyle?

I live a healthy lifestyle by consistently working out four to five days a week, sticking to a strict meal plan on weekdays, drinking plenty of water throughout the day and walking my dog for at least an hour each day.

What’s your process for turning a bad day into a good one?

My process for turning my day from bad to good is either by flipping on my favorite TV show — “Friends” or “Cheers” — or by listening to music to get away from everything.

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading Matthew McConaughey’s autobiography “Green Lights” — which is fantastic — and “Basketball: A Love Story.”

What’s your go-to podcast?

My go-to podcasts are “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” “The Big Picture,” and “The Rewatchables.”

Share the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you.

Happiness is only real when shared.

What is something people in the industry may not know about you?

People may not know this, but I’m a huge sports and movie nerd. I can talk about basketball, football and just about movie endlessly.
