How DynaDome Enhances Community Safety at the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas

Skip Ferebee, the SVP / chief administrative and strategy officer, and Craig Payne, the VP of property and construction at the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, detail how year-round access to their pools through using the retractable structures of DynaDome enhance community safety and wellness.

Providing access to swimming facilities year-round is vital for communities, especially in areas surrounded by water. The two share how their team recognized this need and decided to partner with Dynadome to enhance its pool’s accessibility to better prevent drowning.

Enjoy!

Takeaways

1. Why Drowning Prevention Matters

Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death, particularly among children and individuals who work in or near water. The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas aimed to address this issue by providing a safe environment where community members can learn to swim, regardless of the season.

2. Community Support and Addressing Needs

Local leaders and citizens rallied behind this initiative, emphasizing the importance of swimming education. Many residents — including commercial fishermen — lack basic swimming skills, making this initiative even more critical.

3. Benefits of Partnering with Dynadome

Since partnering with Dynadome, the YMCA has experienced numerous benefits that extend beyond just having a pool. Thanks to the new enclosure, the Y can keep its pool open for an additional eight months a year. This extended access means hundreds of opportunities for swimming lessons and increased community engagement in health and wellness activities.

4. Health and Wellness Opportunities

The pool serves not only as a venue for swim lessons but also for health-focused activities like aqua therapy. Individuals with mobility issues can engage in low-impact exercises, which are crucial for their health. Maintaining regular access to the pool promotes overall fitness, reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

5. A Beneficial Partnership

Working with Dynadome has brought unexpected benefits that have positively impacted the YMCA and its members. Exceptional communication from Dynadome throughout the project was seen by the YMCA. This support included meeting tight project deadlines and ensuring clear expectations were set and met.

Dynadome’s commitment went beyond just construction. They also donated to support community initiatives, demonstrating their dedication to the mission of the YMCA and the safety of the community.

6. Lasting Advice

For other YMCAs, JCCs and nonprofit recreation centers considering a similar partnership, look for a company that values community engagement as much as you do. Also, focus on long-term relationships. A good partner will continue to support you even after the project is completed, ensuring your facilities remain effective and well-maintained.
