The La Porte County Family YMCA has been hosting the Underwater Easter Egg Hunt for over a decade. This year, two events will be hosted – one on Saturday, March 27 at the La Porte branch, and the other on Thursday, April 1 at the Michigan City (MC) Elston branch. Both events are free to the public.
“Our annual event is attended by upwards of 100 kids, and with the addition of a second event at our MC Elston branch in recent years, it just continues to grow,” said Jessica Durham, the marketing and special event director at the La Porte Y. “We have participants ranging from toddlers to teens, and even some parents with babies hop in the pool.”
During the event, participants are encouraged to make a splash in the pool while hunting for Easter eggs. Additionally, each child will receive a goody bag and the opportunity to take an underwater photo or a photo with the Easter Bunny. Golden eggs will also be hidden in the event and may lead to winning a special prize.
In addition to the Easter Bunny, the Michigan City Police Department, as well as the Michigan City Fire Department’s SCUBA Team will be making a special appearance.
Safety requirements for participating in the Underwater Easter Egg Hunt include:
- A completed swim test 30-minutes prior to the start of the event for all children wishing to swim without a parent.
- A waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian for each participant prior to the event.
“As a non-profit organization, it’s very important to us to host these free events for our community,” said Durham. “It’s one of the many ways we are able to give back.”
