A torch is being passed for Community Rec Magazine, and it is the torch of editorship. John Reecer, the assistant editor for the publication, will be stepping up to replace Brittany Howard.
Howard has been overseeing the brand since late 2020. “For the last few years, my favorite part of working on Community Rec has been telling impactful nonprofit stories,” wrote Howard in her last editor’s letter for the magazine. “Through interviews, meeting at conferences and hosting the first Community Rec Leadership Summit, I’ve been inspired. I’ve not only been inspired, but I’ve increasingly felt the urge to be on the other side of the conversation — to be part of the team making the impact in their community.”
As such, Howard will be joining a nonprofit team located in Louisville, Kentucky, that provides mental and behavioral health services for children, adults and families. In this role, she will look to expand needed resources and services throughout Louisville and to surrounding communities.
Community Rec Magazine’s parent company Peake Media is thankful for the work Howard has done on the brand and is excited that Reecer will be stepping into this leadership role. “We are immensely grateful to Brittany Howard for her outstanding contributing to Community Rec Magazine over the last four years,” said Rachel Zabonick-Chonko, the editor-in-chief of Peake Media. “Her leadership has been instrumental in propelling the brand to new heights. As we welcome John Reecer into his new role as editor, we are confident in his ability to carry out the brand’s mission of educating and empowering YMCAs, JCCs and community recreation facilities.”
“John is a natural fit for the editor role,” said Howard. “He’s worked very hard behind-the-scenes for the last year and I’m excited for him to take on this opportunity and continue growing Community Rec.”
Reecer is grateful for the opportunity to lead a brand for a world-impacting industry. “I’m incredibly excited and blessed to be taking on the role of editor of Community Rec Magazine,” he said. “Through my time as assistant editor, I’ve seen the invaluable impact of community recreation centers and enjoyed the collaboration and connections made with industry leaders. Under the leadership of Brittany Howard, this publication has successfully empowered recreation professionals by providing them with pertinent resources and information, and it will continue to do so for years to come.”
