As part of its highly anticipated Capital Improvement Project, the YMCA of McCook recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction on the transformative plan.

The undertaking marks a major milestone in the effort to expand and modernize the YMCA’s facilities. Construction began in March on what will be a state-of-the-art, multi-phase renovation and expansion. The project will provide enhanced opportunities for wellness, recreation and community engagement.

“We’re extremely thrilled to break ground on this project that will help make McCook, Nebraska, and the surrounding region a better place to learn, grow and thrive,” said Mitch Gross, the CEO of the YMCA of McCook. “We’re proud of the work that has been done to get to this point. Putting a shovel in the ground truly makes our vision for a better community become reality. We certainly wouldn’t be in this position without the support of so many people, most notably the campaigners, donors and visionaries who contributed in countless ways.”

To date, the project campaign has raised over $17.4 million toward the Y’s goal of $17.6 million. The YMCA is now in the final stretch, with every contribution at this stage making a significant impact in ensuring that the center remains a vibrant and welcoming hub for generations to come.

Project Details

Key improvements will include an expanded gymnasium with an elevated walking track, a fully renovated indoor aquatics center, and a modernized fitness and wellness center with upgraded equipment and more space for health-focused activities.

“The modernization of the McCook YMCA Wellness Center will allow for an inclusive user experience with an open concept floor plan containing  strength, cardio and functional training zones,” said Gross. “Complete with a new line of equipment, the layout has been strategically designed by fitness professionals to cater to the needs of users from all demographics. The McCook YMCA Wellness Center will also be implementing a 24/7 model to serve the needs of the community.”

Additionally, the project will introduce a revitalized youth development center and outdoor playground. This will help ensure a safe and engaging environment for children and teens. It will also provide dedicated social spaces for youth, families and community groups to gather and connect.

To minimize disruptions, construction will be completed in phases. This will allow members and program participants to continue utilizing many YMCA services. The first phase of the project will focus on the renovation of the pool. This area is expected to reopen in December 2025. The full project is anticipated to take 20 months to be completed.

Key Takeaways

For capital project success, Gross advised industry leaders to utilize the expertise of professionals. These individuals will guide you through the process of visioning, feasibility and fundraising.

“Having never been on a project of this magnitude before, it was essential that we aligned ourselves with a quality team of professionals to provide advice in making sound decisions,” said Gross. “Next, I would preach patience. Capital improvement projects take time. Our first conversation about a project took place in February of 2021, with an expected completion date of November 2026. That’s 69 months in totality, so patience is key.”

Another important top Gorss provided is this project’s success has been partly due to gaining the trust and support of key stakeholders in the community. People want to know community rec centers will be good stewards of the funds needed to complete the project. They want assurance undertaking of this magnitude will meet the needs of the community.

“If these boxes are checked, then these stakeholders will be willing to help tell your story with you,” said Gross. “Finally, the last piece of advice I would offer is to stay the course. There are going to be peaks and valleys along the way. If you believe in your project and have faith in the team you have assembled, then it’s going to happen. Just trust the process.”
