Behind the Cover: YMCA of Greater San Antonio

The cover story subject for the September/October issue of Community Rec Magazine is the YMCA of Greater San Antonio and CEO Louis Lopez.

Lopez’s first job at his local YMCA in San Antonio was as a youth sports director. He didn’t initially view the role as a career choice. But that first job would start a decades-long journey, eventually bringing him to a watershed moment in his hometown: In late 2022, he became the first person of color to be named president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater San Antonio in its 148 years of existence.

The story also takes a close look at his servant leadership philosophy and how the Y reflects the unique community and culture of San Antonio. One such example is the Y’s commitment to Siclovia — the largest health and wellness event in the city — each year. The family-friendly, free celebration turns streets within a three-mile radius in the city into a safe place for exercise and play.
