A recent COVID-19 study examining 89 YMCA fitness centers was conducted between September 4 and November 30, by the North Carolina (NC) Alliance of the YMCAs.
With almost 1.3 million visits across the YMCA locations in North Carolina, the Y was notified of 57 COVID-19 cases, resulting in a positivity rate of .0045%. The COVID-19 study reported no clusters in the YMCA fitness centers, calling it a bright spot considering the struggles the industry has faced this year.
The NC Alliance of the YMCAs claim strict standards and exceeding the guideline recommendations of the state and local health experts, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has resulted in the low COVID-19 positivity rate.
“The Y remains on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis response, serving the most vulnerable members of our communities,” said Sherée Vodicka, the CEO of the NC Alliance of YMCAs in a statement. “YMCAs are so much more than a gym; they are a critical community resource and partner. We expect the critical community need to grow in 2021, even with the promising vaccine on the horizon. It is important that YMCAs remain operational with our current safety practices so that we can keep providing vital community services.”
