YMCA of Lincoln, NE Hosts Annual Youth Sports Adventure Run

On July 6, the YMCA of Lincoln, NE held its 12th YMCA Youth Sports Adventure Run, a 1.75-mile obstacle course at its YMCA Wright Park. The run is a highly anticipated event and is open to the entire community. The 251 competitors at this year’s Adventure Run ranged from two-year-olds to those in their 80s.

“This is an event the entire family can actively participate in each year,” said Todd Johnson, the youth sports executive director at the YMCA of Lincoln, NE. “The entire community — no matter their age — can participate in a fun, low-stress activity. The event started in 2013 as a run for youth seven to 14 years old. It was developed into a run for all ages the year after. Each year, we see numerous runners return, proudly sporting t-shirts from past events.”

Putting the ‘Fun’ in Fundraising

Not only is the event a successful family program, it’s also an important fundraising event for the Y. The money raised goes back to youth programs and financial assistance to ensure the services of the YMCA of Lincoln, NE remain accessible. In 2023, the Y awarded over $750,000 in financial assistance to more than 6,500 community members.

“While this event is an intentional family program offered by YMCA youth sports, it also serves as a fundraiser for the YMCA’s Open Doors Financial Assistance program,” explained Johnson. “The proceeds from the event support a fantastic cause, making it a meaningful experience for everyone involved.”

Creating a Successful Yearly Event

With such a popular tradition, Johnson noted the Y’s work to ensure every year meets participants’ expectations. Planning and marketing begin at least six months in advance. The event also has a dedicated committee of staff and volunteers to ensure it goes well.

The course changes every year, and the team is constantly advertising, brainstorming and looking for ways to improve the event. Thinking of creative ways to incorporate alternations is one of the hardest challenges for Johnson when facilitating this program, but it enhances the run every year. As the event changes with the community’s needs, it offers unique experiences that make runners excited to compete again next year.

“Try to make your community better every day,” advised Johnson. “Keep in mind what type of events your community may be lacking and what resources you have that may fill those voids. Create a plan and find good community support at the start of the planning process.”

Providing a top-quality experience every year also fuels Johnson’s biggest highlight when facilitating this program: the community’s joy. Because of the YMCA’s work to keep the Adventure Run fun and safe, it’s cemented the event’s place on the community’s calendar.

“The YMCA Adventure Run has become a cherished annual tradition,” said Johnson. “It unites participants of all ages in a celebration of fitness, family and philanthropy. The Adventure Run has become a highlight of the community’s Fourth of July week with families incorporating it into their holiday plans.”
