YMCA of Honolulu announced Tuesday that Greg Waibel, who has served as president and CEO since 2021, has been appointed COO of YMCA of the USA. This national role is a reflection of his 20-year career with the YMCA and the lasting impact he’s made across Hawaii — from guiding the Y’s post-pandemic recovery to expanding programs and partnerships that now reach 115-plus community sites statewide.
Waibel is currently serving as an interim special advisor at the YMCA of Honolulu until his new appointment becomes effective with YMCA of the USA on August 29, 2025.
Stepping into the role of interim president and CEO at YMCA of Honolulu will be Lisa Ontai. She brings over 34 years of experience in strategic leadership, communications and community engagement. Ontai has served as the YMCA’s vice president of marketing and mission advancement since 2012, playing a vital role in expanding access to programs, guiding the organization through the pandemic and advancing the Y’s mission to serve keiki, kupuna and families across Hawaii.
A statement on social media from YMCA of Honolulu said Ontai has the full support of the Y’s Association Board of Directors and will provide the stability and continued momentum to lead the organization forward.
