The Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA announced Jeremy Popiel has assumed the role of CEO. Popiel succeeds Jim Thomas following his retirement after 46 years of dedicated service to the YMCA movement.

“The YMCA has always been about people, community and opportunity. That won’t change,” said Popiel in a statement on social media. “My goal is to bring our communities closer together, respond to the needs of today’s families, and make sure every child and family we serve feels supported.”

Popiel’s journey to this position reflects the best of the YMCA. Over the past 13 years, he has built a reputation as a thoughtful, mission-driven leader committed to strengthening communities and creating opportunities for others. Most recently as COO, Popiel helped oversee an $11 million organization serving thousands of children, families and individuals across Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

Many of us have had the opportunity to witness Jeremy’s leadership firsthand. Whether guiding the successful turnaround of the Greater Pittston YMCA, helping lead the integration of branches across our association, or supporting staff and volunteers throughout the organization, he has consistently approached every challenge with integrity, humility, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

As Popiel begins this new role, he inherits a strong foundation built by Jim Thomas and generations of YMCA leaders, while bringing his own vision for the future. The YMCA asked the industry to congratulate Popiel as he begins this exciting new chapter of leadership for the Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA, and the team there looks forward to all that lies ahead.
