The YMCA of Tuscaloosa is expanding wellness, fitness and recreation opportunities through a new project with the University of West Alabama (UWA). The YMCA will be delivering health and wellness programming out of the future renovated Student Union Building on UWA’s campus.

That portion of the facility will be managed as a YMCA program center with memberships available for students, faculty, staff and the community. Work will be completed on the project in late 2027.

Through the collaboration, the YMCA will provide program, operational and staff leadership, trainings, and system implementation. UWA will deliver facilities and program space, staff support via work-study students, interns and a vibrant employee pool.

“By working together, we can deliver greater impact to a region that, historically, may not have had the same opportunities for youth development and healthy living programming for youth, families and seniors,” said Jeff Knox, the CEO of the YMCA of Tuscaloosa.

Further Details

UWA Fitness Center members can also now participate in YMCA’s Nationwide Membership program, which allows members to utilize participating Y facilities across the country while traveling or on vacation, offering greater flexibility and access to health and wellness services.

As the partnership expands, Knox said the Y is exploring additional opportunities for collaboration, such as Safety Around Water to 2nd and 3rd graders, and chronic disease support programming to Seniors.

“The University of West Alabama’s commitment to being a community resource and the YMCA of Tuscaloosa’s mission to deliver programs and services to all, is truly what makes this partnership work,” said Knox. “As a result, the YMCA of Tuscaloosa is going through the process of a name change to the YMCA of West Alabama. As that is more reflective to our strategic goals of serving the whole of Sumter County and the West Alabama region.”

Currently, the YMCA of Tuscaloosa is delivering youth development programming to Livingston, Alabama, and surrounding areas. Programs include summer day camp, after-school childcare, and youth sports such as flag football, basketball and tumbling.

Lasting Advice

Knox advised for other community rec leaders to first recognize that no single organization or entity can meet all the needs in a community. Instead, you can multiply your impact by bringing joined resources to bare and working together with partners that bring something to the table your organization can’t.

“Once a community need or gap is recognized, ask, ‘Does it serve our mission? Can we solve it alone or do we need a partner?’ If yes, find the partner who’s intellectual capital, skills, mission, etc. align with the YMCA to better impact the communities we serve,” said Knox. “Always have an advocate with your partner. It’s critical that someone on the inside helps you navigate a different organizational culture and can help communicate why working together is beneficial to all parties.”
