To meet the needs of its community, the Hanover Area YMCA in Hanover, Pennsylvania, recently opened a new dog park for furry friends and their owners to enjoy.
Cam’ela Bisch, the CEO of the Hanover Area YMCA, said the idea grew from conversations among members, community partners, the Hanover borough, and a Board of Trustees volunteers who saw a need for a safe, welcoming space for dogs and their owners.
“Pets play a powerful role in people’s wellness, and our lead donors shared a vision to create a place where both people and pets could be active, connected and included,” said Bisch. “What started as a shared idea evolved into a project that reflects both the Y’s mission to strengthen community and the Borough’s vision for an inclusive, vibrant Hanover.”
Below, Bisch details how dog park is benefiting both members and the Y, as well as advice for other industry leaders.
What are the features of the dog park, and is it open to non-members?
The 15,000-square-foot park includes synthetic turf, a covered pavilion, water stations, benches, shaded seating, and separate areas for large and small dogs. It’s designed for safe play, exercise and social interaction.
Memberships are open to both Y members and non-members for a minimal fee, helping maintain the space and welcoming everyone who wants to connect, stay active and enjoy time outdoors with their pets.
How does the dog park benefit the community?
It offers a new type of gathering space that promotes physical activity, social connection and emotional well-being. The park brings people from all walks of life together helping them build friendships, share experiences and feel a sense of belonging. It’s another way the Y helps strengthen the fabric of our community.

How does this development benefit the YMCA?
The dog park expands how people experience the Y — not just as a gym or swim center, but as a place that fosters belonging and connection. It shows how the Y continues to evolve, creating welcoming spaces, promoting wellness in new ways and building meaningful partnerships that serve the community.
As CEO, how does this addition further the Y’s mission?
Our mission is to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The dog park brings that mission to life by encouraging movement, mental wellness and connection across generations. It’s a reminder that innovation guided by purpose can strengthen community and create places where everyone feels they belong.
What advice do you have for leaders creating unique programming?
Listen closely to your community — great ideas often start with simple conversations. Don’t be afraid to rethink what “wellness” means, because connection, movement and joy are all part of a healthy life. Collaboration is key. When innovation is guided by mission and grounded in purpose, it creates lasting impact and strengthens community.
