YMCA of Greater Birmingham recently opened its newly renovated and expanded Northeast YMCA branch in the Roebuck community.
Clark Virden, the chief development officer, SVP, at the YMCA of Greater Birmingham, said the suburb has recently fallen into a state of violent crime and economic depression. Roebuck residents needed better access to a variety of opportunities and services like affordable housing and healthcare.
Thankfully, the YMCA was uniquely qualified to use its existing property to create a model others can follow.
“The newly renovated Northeast Community YMCA began construction in September of 2023, was completed in August 2025 and began offering community services immediately,” said Virden. “Houses in the community are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.”

Project Details
The YMCA of Greater Birmingham assembled a strategic collaboration of partners to address Roebuck’s most pressing needs. Those included attainable housing, pediatric care and mental health.
The Northeast YMCA’s full renovation includes the following surrounding amenities:
- An early learning pre-K classroom.
- Academic and development programming for youth and teens.
- Programming and activities for seniors.
- A community garden.
- Two age-specific playgrounds.
- Multi-purpose sports field.
Also, a partnership with Habitat for Humanity will create a path to homeownership. This includes:
- 23 single family homes will be built on the land surrounding the Northeast YMCA.
- Creates a purpose-built, walkable neighborhood.
- Offers affordable and quality workforce housing in a community in need.
Then, the Christ Health Center will address health inequities in children through pediatric care for children living in low-to-moderate households, health and wellness education, and access to additional diagnostic equipment, dental care and pharmacy.
In addition, Impact Family Counseling will provide onsite services to address the counseling and mental health needs of families.
Advice and Future Hopes
Virden said with no one else in the community stepping up to meet the many needs of the neighborhood, YMCA leadership knew they needed to step up to fill urgent needs. They did so by committing to being more than just a gym-and-swim.
“The newly renovated Northeast YMCA is a true community center — not a typical membership branch — and directly tackles needs head on,” said Virden. “It offers dedicated programming and mentorship for youth and teens, health and wellness programs for seniors, an early learning center for children, out-of-school childcare and other community-based programs to be implemented in the future.”
For other rec centers looking to make a meaningful difference in your community, Virden said to keep the focus on what matters most. And that’s whatever your member base doesn’t have.
“Assess the needs of the community and take inventory of what you have to offer,” said Virden. “For the gaps, bring in trusted partners to support and augment your vision. Alert others to the needs of the community and ask them to bring whatever they can to the table. Think bold and ask yourself, ‘What if?’”
